magnolias - Dawes Arboretum

Red magnolias are tossed violently in the wind against a stormy sky that is typical of a central Ohio spring day.  The flower petals more resemble the feathers of tropical birds in flight as they flutter in the breeze.  Although the wind is relentless, the flowers of the magnolia are as strong as they are beautiful, and the flowers simply bend and twist to accomodate the wind's forces without damage to themselves.  A visual example of Zen philosohpy in nature!

The rich magenta hues are contrasted superbly in this image which feezes the motion of the flowers but yet does not betray the dynamic feeling of the moment.  The picture is truly a balance of beauty and violence, rich pastels and featureless grays, and soft textures in contrast to stark branches.  An absolute visual playground courtesy of nature and the gardener.

This dynamic scene was captured at Dawes Arboretum in Central Ohio.
